or her life about all the medication process required for any old human beings.
As a caregiver
in independent home care services,
it is important to know the side effects of common medications so that you can
tell when a medication is doing its job or if there is an adverse reaction.
When people get older they are prone to increase illnesses. This can be the
result of older people by taking more medications than younger people. Clients
who are older often take multiple medications simultaneously.
It is common for
older people who are admitted to a care home under the guidance of a caregiver
to experience four or five medical conditions at the same time. Each condition
requires separate medical treatment and medicines. This means that the client
will be taking multiple medications, each of which has different side effects
and possible interactions. A person who is taking many medications, each of
which can cause adverse effects, is referred to as polypharmacy.
Medications such
as Nitrazepam and Temazapma can cause elderly people to experience drowsiness
in the morning. Certain clients have compared this feeling to that of a
hangover. They can also be responsible for falls in elderly people in the early
morning and at night. The medicines inhibit mobility and can increase
incontinence because they slow down the reaction time in the body. Neuroleptics
can include Haloperidol, Risperidone, or Olanzapine. The need for these medicines
are common in older adult clients and can cause constipation, drowsiness, low
blood pressure (known as hypertension), and impaired temperature control in the
body.
Antidepressants
can include Lofepramine, Amitriptyline, or Fluoxetine. They can cause low blood
pressure, which makes the client feel sleepy and confused. They can also cause
problems passing urine, dry mouth, or constipation. Diuretics are often
referred to as water tablets. Medications such as Frusemide can work on kidney
loops and cause incontinence in older patients. The tablets often work in six
hour loops, and if they are taken on an empty stomach, they work faster.
Thiazides, or Bendrofluazide, work for a period of twelve hours and can cause
side effects such as gout. Other side effects include fainting, falling, and
low blood pressure.
Anti-inflammatory
medicines include Ibuprofen or Aspirin. These medications can cause
gastro-intestinal bleeding, which can lead to fatal effects. These medicines
include Nifedipine or Atenolol and are meant to lower blood pressure. However,
they can cause the heart to slow far below a normal pace, a condition known as
Bradycardia. These medicines can also cause fainting, falling, nausea, and
vomiting. If you believe that a
medication is causing a side effect, you should discuss this with the prescribing
officer as soon as you are able. The pharmacist should be able to provide you
with an abundance of information regarding the potential side effects of each
medicine. It is beneficial to learn as
much as you can learn about each new medicine you encounter.
